Abstract

|
A family came to therapy for nine sessions over five months. Prior to the first appointment, the parents were contemplating divorce and one of the children was experiencing problems, both internal (anxiety, guilt, regret) and external (inattention, lying, defiance, stealing, maladjustment to school). The therapist assessed the child¡¯s problems to be a function of the parents¡¯ negative communication method, ineffectual solution attempts, and negative parenting methods. The therapist, grounded in a family systems-based approach, intervened using MRI techniques. As a result, the couple¡¯s conflict lessened enough for the child to notice, they implemented new parenting methods, and the child¡¯s internal and external symptoms improved.
